Am I a good person? Are you? We would like to think and even say so, but as human beings we’re prone to sin. If we forget that, we attempt to justify our iniquity under the pretense of goodness. This in turn makes us blind to our wrongdoing.
Dear Lord, I ask for your forgiveness. I am in need of redemption.
If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him! (Matthew 7:11 ESV)
You then, who are evil. Who is Jesus addressing there? The exceptionally wicked? All of us? Luther writes, “Man should not present himself as being good because that way he will never learn to love God” (Quaestio de viribus et voluntate; my translation). If we don’t admit our sinful nature, how can we repent and seek God’s mercy?
